An expense or income is "paid" if it has really happened. If the transaction is planned but has not actually completed, it can be marked as "unpaid." This state is useful to record transactions that will happen in the future. An unpaid transaction is not counted in the calculation of the balances. If a transaction remains "unpaid" after its expiry date, a notification appears on the Home page.
